About Us

The story of The Big 20 Bowling Center began well over half a century ago in 1950, when owner Sofolki (Mike) Anton constructed the 20-lane bowling alley on Route 1 in Scarborough, ME. The grand opening had prominent public figures bowling on each of the 20 lanes, & The Big 20, which was originally called State O' Maine, became a hit overnight. Though State O' Maine was the center’s chosen name via a public contest, “The Big 20” (a close second) had a ring to it that could not be ignored. In a just a few short years, it became the center’s official name.

PIN BOYS

Over the years, The Big 20 Bowling Center grew into a community fixture. Not only did it host some of the biggest bowling tournaments in the region — it also employed many of Scarborough’s youth. Before automated pin machines, employees known as “Pin Boys” set up & removed pins between turns. For decades in Scarborough, this was the consummate “first job” of youth in the city. For Mike Anton’s son, Chris Anton, The Big 20 was more than just a summer job — it became a career. Chris owned & operated the business his father started for over 30 years through 1980, 1990s & 2000s.

RICH TRADITION

Then, of course, there are the tournaments. In the course of its 73-year history, The Big 20 has hosted three world championships, two junior world championships & numerous Maine State Championships, drawing bowlers from all over New England, Atlantic Canada & all over the world. In 2010, The Big 20 Bowling Center was purchased by Rick Jones & Mike Walker. In 2017, Mike became the sole owner & operator. Mike, who has been bowling since age 5 in the Junior Bowling Program, is committed to sharing his passion for bowling with his community through maintaining the rich tradition & exceptional facility of The Big 20 Bowling Center.
